What Types of Eye Emergencies We Treat

Our doctors provide urgent evaluation and care for a wide range of eye emergencies, from sudden vision changes to painful injuries and infections. Emergency visits may include a comprehensive eye exam, diagnostic testing, medication, or referral for additional treatment depending on the condition. Prompt care can be critical in protecting your vision and preventing long-term damage.

If you are unsure whether your symptoms require emergency care, we encourage you to contact our office. Our team can help determine whether you should be seen immediately or directed to the emergency room.

Red Eye and Eye Infections

A red or irritated eye can be caused by infections, inflammation, allergies, or injury. Some conditions, such as bacterial or viral infections, require timely treatment to relieve discomfort and prevent complications. Redness accompanied by pain, discharge, light sensitivity, or vision changes should be evaluated promptly.

Our eye care specialists can diagnose the cause of red eye and recommend appropriate treatment, which may include prescription eye drops, medications, or supportive care based on the severity of your symptoms.

Foreign Body in the Eye

Foreign objects such as dust, metal fragments, wood, or debris can become lodged in or scratch the surface of the eye. Attempting to remove these objects yourself can worsen the injury and increase the risk of infection. Eye injuries involving foreign bodies often require professional evaluation and careful removal.

If you suspect something is in your eye or experience persistent discomfort after an exposure, seek immediate care. Early treatment helps reduce pain, prevent infection, and protect your vision.

Sudden Blurred or Lost Vision

Sudden blurred vision or vision loss is a medical emergency that should never be ignored. These symptoms can be caused by a variety of serious conditions affecting the eye, optic nerve, or blood flow to the eye. Immediate evaluation is essential to determine the cause and begin appropriate treatment.

If you experience sudden changes in vision in one or both eyes, contact our office right away or go directly to the emergency room if symptoms occur after hours.

Other Common Eye Emergencies

Additional eye emergencies may include eye trauma, chemical exposure, flashes of light, new floaters, severe eye pain, or sensitivity to light. These symptoms can indicate underlying conditions that require prompt attention to prevent vision loss or permanent damage.

When in doubt, it is always better to seek evaluation. Our team is here to help guide you to the appropriate level of care and ensure your eyes receive timely attention.
